A national network of citizen scientists
Reviewing the mapping tools and basic platform structure to help users access the best value from these tools and continue adding data.

The NBN atlas is the hub for a real community of citizen scientists and organisations alike. We knew the platform was well used by people across the country. When we invited some of those users to participate we were thrilled to host workshops involving 30+ people. We used this time to assess the platform and ideate pain points and opportunities.
Our main objective was to simplify the search experience. There were a lot of maps that felt hidden away on the platform. Without changing the core functionality of the tools, we wanted users to easily find these mapping tools and understand how to use them. We also wanted to improve how data was displayed on the map, so users could quickly interpret species results at a glance.

The design team met with the NBN leadership and developers to ensure what we were proposing answered the organisation's needs and could be mapped to their current strategic objectives.
It’s a fascinating and comprehensive piece of work. I really like how it captures perspectives from organisations, individuals, and those discovering the Atlas organically - it gives a great breadth and cross-section of our user base.
